Green Gables Log Home
Log homes and the great outdoors go together, whether hiking, hunting, biking, or fishing…what is more fitting than coming home to the rustic beauty of a log house? The location of this cabin, adjacent to the Little Red River, one of Arkansas’s blue-ribbon trout streams, is a great example of the log home lifestyle. This family had always been fascinated with the beauty of a “real” log cabin and began to look for the perfect site to build their dream home. They found the spot tucked at the end of a long road in Heber Springs, AR. Now that they had their land, it was time to find the perfect lodgings to construct on it.
With a large family, the home was planned with function at the forefront. Visitors are welcomed into the home through the kitchen and adjacent informal dining space. A casual entryway is accessed from the garage, conveniently located by the mudroom and laundry room. Also located on the first floor is an office with a connected full bath, allowing for flexibility in the room’s use. Continuing the tour of the first floor, an expansive master bedroom includes a large walk-in closet and spacious ensuite. On the second floor, the loft is also perfect for a home office, play area, or, as the family decided, an additional sleeping area with bunk beds. There are 3 more bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms on this floor as well. One of these could easily be considered a second master bedroom since it includes its own private bathroom. In addition to the overall layout of the home, the homeowners added several special features to make the home truly unique. A king post truss using ten-inch logs creates an impressive and welcoming approach to the home. A soaring 27’ fireplace in the great room framed by large windows makes for impressive views both inside and outside the home. The oversized antler chandelier, Aspen log stair railing, and hand-scraped wood flooring all add to the rustic quality of the home. One of the final touches was the Sherwood Green scalloped roof from which the house got its name. Green Gables is a wonderful example of all you can do with a log home!

Heavy Timbered Mountain Lodge
Set into the slope of a hill, this Loon Mountain Timber Frame getaway is awe-inspiring at any time of year. Every aspect of the project is as spectacular as the oversized timbers used for the frame of this almost 12,000 square foot home (including the finished basement and garage). From the front of the building, it certainly looks impressive, but the house itself is far bigger than it appears. Featuring cedar siding, a spacious great room, and an outdoor fireplace – this mountain home is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
The exterior utilizes cedar shingles and shiplap siding, along with stone veneer and decorative trusses that evoke a chalet feel. The kitchen features a massive island that could double as a dining table and stonework that replicates a large fireplace. The spacious great room showcases the heavy timbers and is accented nicely by a stone fireplace and window wall, however, that is just the beginning in this feature-rich residence.
The lower level features a large recreational room with a pool table, fireplace, and a bar that would be welcome in any commercial establishment. A wraparound bar is located next to a stone wine cellar that makes for another conversation piece. At least five bedrooms and a bunkroom ensure there is plenty of room for family and friends.
Given the beautiful location, there are plenty of options for enjoying the outdoors or at least the views. With multiple levels, this home has multiple decks, including a screened porch that has a large fireplace, so you can get fresh air even on chilly days.
South Sutton
A Mountain Style Home with Rustic Details
Attention to detail is the hallmark of The South Sutton, a mountain style home that seeks to blend with its natural surroundings both in look and materials. At just over 4,000 square feet, this gorgeous home has beautiful, thoughtful touches both inside and out. It also features a practical, open floor plan that creates easy flow through the main floor.
The exterior of this hybrid timber frame residence utilizes Douglas fir, western hemlock siding and cedar shingles to create a warm palette that complements the surrounding woods. Decorative trusses accent the gables of the home, while the garage is topped with a small cupola which adds a farmhouse feel to the property.
Inside the residence, warm, Douglas fir timber frame creates an elegant rustic quality. A mudroom connects the garage to the main house; however, it can also be accessed by both the front of the house and the back deck. There is also a small lavatory nearby.
Entering the house through the front door, the open and bright interior is readily apparent. To the left is the dining room which flows into the great room, which features cathedral ceilings and a stone fireplace. Alongside these rooms is the kitchen, which also boasts cathedral ceilings along with a spacious pantry. The rest of the main floor is comprised by two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a den.
Next to the front door is a staircase leading to the second floor. Incorporating wrought iron twig balusters into the design provides an elegant touch. A large loft looks down over the kitchen and great room, while the rest of the top floor is bad up of the master bedroom suite. This includes a master bath, steam shower, and a walk-in closet almost as large as the bedroom itself.
Not only was the South Sutton designed to accentuate its environment, but the owners made a conscious decision to make it as local a project as could be. For example, the property’s cabin utilized timber harvested from the lot itself. Local artisans and craftsmen were integral in providing the beautiful touches that make this house one of a kind.
Blue Ridge Mountain Home
Single Level Living with Wintergreen Mountain Views
Battling 40 mph winds and zero-degree temperatures on Wintergreen Mountain, this residence was completed despite rather challenging conditions. Additionally, the Blue Ridge Mountain Home required a multi-level concrete foundation, due to it being built into the mountainside.
Douglas Fir was used for the timber frame sections of this hybrid home. The exterior also utilizes red cedar shingles, board and batten, and a stone accent to create an aesthetic that mirrors the surrounding environment.
Entering the building from the main porch brings you into the Great Room. This large, open space features cathedral ceilings and a large fireplace. Meanwhile, to the left of the great room is the Master Suite, encompassing a large bedroom, spacious walk-in closet, and master bathroom. The rest of this wing is made up of another bedroom and bathroom.
On the other side of the Great Room is a dining room that leads into the large kitchen. The kitchen features a long island with bar seating and a sink. Therefore, ample counterspace for prep work is available for the ambitious home cook. Next to the kitchen is a service wing that includes a pantry, laundry room, and a mudroom. A breezeway connects this part of the house to the two-car garage.
Finally, terrace and rear porch are the perfect place to enjoy the views of the mountains, do some grilling, and sit by the fire pit. This terrace was elevated and utilizes a special membrane and integral drain system that allowed Smith & Robertson to include the lower-level living space. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large family room make up this floor of the residence.
